September 2 was the Opening Ceremony and Graduation for Ministry Training School (MTS). All students are required to wear white shirt, black pants, and black shoes. SCM graduates (School of Cell-Church Ministry) wore silver ties. SIS graduates (School of Intercultural Studies) wore blue ties. New enrolled students wore purple ties. When Kent put on the uniform, he looked like a Cantonese student. On that day, friends and relative came to the ceremony. MTS value every student. After we listen to graduates’ testimonies, we know this year will be a memorable one to us. We were right! During our Pre-Training Camp, we got a taste of what SCM is all about. There were many strict rules. For example, everyone must be prompt on time. If you’re late, not only are you required to run a lap, every member of your student cell group must run with you. All assignments for the week must be signed and read by your mentor. All written reports should be genuine self-evaluation of your struggles & triumph. In addition to classroom assignment, students are required to participate in various kinds of service (at least 20 hours per week) – learning to be a servant in your pastoral zone, your church, and your community. The staff at SCM is very considerate. They helped us find four volunteers to interpret Cantonese for us during the class. Other classmates also volunteered to interpret for us during our morning chapel hour. We have a class called Evangelism. The pastor required us to speak to at least one stranger each day, the more the better. The purpose is to help us break our comfort zone, establish friendship with other, so we would be comfortable sharing the Gospel at the appropriate timing. So, we forced ourselves to approach strangers. Actually, it’s not that bad. We find it easy to start a conversation with others since we have two kids and we’re new to Hong Kong. One afternoon at a playground, we conversed with one mother who lived near by. We later exchanged our phone number. She volunteered to take us to another park next time. We’re grateful that God provided a baby sitter for us, so Caroline could be more involved in the training at SCM. Our previous seminary training was more focused on knowledge. This time is for real!
